I felt like this book overpromised and underdelivered. I kept waiting for the big reveal, waiting for the big a-ha of what I needed to do to scale my business and allow it "to run itself." Turns out, this book tells me to create something I already have and is as old as business itself: standard operating procedures (SOP).The case studies were a joke, offering nothing of value. All of them basically said "my business was chaotic until I read SYSTEMology and wrote down my processes and procedures."Halfway through the book, I figured the author must be using the book as a marketing tool to sell something. I get to the chapter on project management and systems management software and keep waiting for the pitch, which never comes. Instead he invites the reader to find out what his latest software recommendations are by visiting his website...and that's where the pitch is. You need to sign up for his email list in order to learn that-- surprise!--he recommends subscription systems management software that he developed and sells.I feel duped: I bought the book hoping to learn something new for my business, but to me, it seems the author simply used a new name for SOPs and wrote the book so he could market his systemHUB software.I got a nugget or two from the book, but mostly it was a disappointment. I somehow managed to "hack the system" and get the book early. :)And because of that, I was able to finish the book already and write this review.My final analysis? .. Even the first 100 pages of this book – if applied – will radically improve your business!The book is extremely practical, with actual examples for how to go about improving your business systems (and we all have systems, some of them are just really poor).The most important takeaways for me were:- Nailing the "Critical Client Flow" (CCF) for ONE customer avatar and ONE primary product/service.- The erroneous thought the the business owner is the only one who can create systems (this was liberating!)- The power of having a "systems champion" on your team, who they are, and what they can do for your business- How systemizing your business can be a phased process, especially with a clear plan to do so (this book is it!)- How to actually go about documenting your business systems (the author shares some seriously awesome shortcuts in the book)I could go on... but those are some of the biggest takeaways for me.And hey, it doesn't hurt that the author (David) is a seriously standup guy.
